"Vue has been so much more than a restaurant," Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club board president Steve O'Brien told 30A.com when the club announced on September 14 that the restaurant had permanently closed. The building's story goes back to 1971, when the original Beach Club opened along the Gulf. Over the next five decades it turned into the place where the west end of 30A went for special-occasion dinners and sunset views.
The club has said Vue will be replaced, but it has not said when. Its own planning letter from this spring also shows that members are still debating whether the next building will be open to the public at all. Until that's settled, Dune Allen's nearest public Gulf-front dinner sits a few miles east.
Why the club closed Vue instead of repairing it
The club's closure notice and the 30A.com report give the same reason. Routine maintenance led to a professional evaluation, and that evaluation found water intrusion and indoor air quality problems in parts of the building. The problems could have been fixed, but the work would have taken a significant investment and a long timeline.
The building was also already scheduled for replacement under the club's long-range master plan. Paying for major repairs on a structure due to come down anyway made little sense, so the board closed it for good. Get The Coast reported the closure the same day.
The closure notice gives no opening date for a new building. It doesn't mention a temporary dining room or an interim beach club setup either.
What the club has decided so far, and what it hasn't
The best public view of the club's thinking is an April 30, 2026 Planning Committee update to members. It describes focus groups and surveys about Vue and the Beach Club. It also says the club's planning and architectural partners at Meyers + Associates had begun "developing early concepts for Vue on 30a, the Beach Club and surrounding facilities."
According to the letter, members agreed on a few priorities: better dining, outdoor gathering spaces, and room to spend time with family and friends at the club. The committee listed two questions as still open:
- Public versus member access. The letter says members offered "thoughtful perspectives" on this and that there is "a range of viewpoints."
- Renovation versus new construction. This was weighed alongside design, regulatory, and financial considerations.
The letter calls the process "still in its early stages" and says a town hall-style member meeting with the architect was planned for mid- to late summer. That letter came out before the September closure. The closure notice that followed didn't settle either question.
The access question matters most to Dune Allen residents who aren't club members. Back in 2018, The Destin Log reported that Vue served the public for lunch, dinner, happy hour, and Sunday brunch. The club's 2026 planning letter treats whether the next building keeps that open door as an unresolved item. For now, nobody knows the timeline or who the future dining room will serve.
The same season closed the park, too
Within five weeks, the west end lost its other easy sunset outing as well. Florida State Parks closed Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, at 7525 W. County Highway 30A, because of Hurricane Isaias. Its park page shows a storm notice effective October 18, 2026, covering the park and its overnight accommodations. The park was already partly limited before the storm. Its main beach boardwalk had been closed for construction since September 16, and visitors were directed to the beach path beside the tram station.
Elsewhere, recovery has moved quickly. By October 13, 30A.com reported that most restaurants, cafés, and stores along 30A had reopened, though some still had limited menus or services. The same report said some beach accesses and beach club facilities were still limited while repairs continued. Park status can change from week to week, so it's worth checking the state's page before planning a sunset walk at Topsail.
Where the Gulf-facing tables are now
With Vue and Topsail both unavailable, the nearest public Gulf-view dinner for Dune Allen is at the corner of County Road 393 and 30A. Beyond that, the options sit in WaterColor and Grayton. Here is how they stood in mid-October:
| Restaurant | Where | Setting | Status, mid-October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar | CR 393 and 30A, across from Gulf Place | Open-air dining on two levels, both with Gulf views, and a sunset-facing dining room | Reopened Oct. 11, per Vacation 30A's recovery tracker |
| Fish Out of Water | 34 Goldenrod Circle, WaterColor | Gulf-front with sunset views | WaterColor Inn reopened Oct. 12–13; call ahead to confirm the restaurant |
| Chiringo | 63 Hotz Avenue, Grayton Beach | Beachside bar and eatery | Call ahead before going |
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is closest to what Vue offered for a west-end evening. The restaurant takes its name from a historic fishing reef just offshore, and it describes its dining room as open-air and sunset-facing, with a full bar and live music daily. It lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Fish Out of Water is WaterColor Resort's signature Gulf-front restaurant. It's a different kind of evening from Vue. The restaurant takes no reservations and seats guests first-come, first-served. Dinner runs from 2 to 10 p.m. daily, with happy hour from 2 to 4. Weekend brunch runs only during peak season, March through July, plus select holiday weekends, so it won't be an option this fall. The restaurant also has a Wine Room for private dining, which may suit groups that used to book Vue for celebrations.
Chiringo in Grayton Beach is a beachside bar and eatery that also hosts Gulf-view private events.
If you don't need the water view, Vacation 30A's Isaias recovery tracker, last updated October 14, logged several places close to Dune Allen as back open by October 12, based on the businesses' own Instagram posts. Stinky's Fish Camp and Stinky's Bait Shack in Dune Allen reopened that day. In Gulf Place and Blue Mountain Beach, The Perfect Pig, Red Fish Taco, Cowgirl Kitchen, and Blackbear Bread Co were all back within the same few days. Mimmo's 30A reopened October 10 for carryout. In Grayton, AJ's came back October 12 with a limited menu, and Hurricane Oyster Bar followed on October 14.
Getting to the 393 corner without driving
Shunk Gulley's corner is also where Walton County's beach tram system is based. The 393 Beach Park and Ride sits at 1668 S. County Hwy 393, a short walk up the road from the restaurant at the corner of 393 and 30A. The county's off-season schedule took effect October 1, and the county's tram page says all trams run daily.
From the Park and Ride, two routes serve the west end:
- Dune Allen Local: stops at the Dune Allen, Fort Panic, Gulfview Heights, and Blue Mountain regional beach accesses and at the Grayton Beach Park and Ride. It departs every 60 minutes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the last departure at 6:30 p.m.
- Ed Walline Express: runs directly to the Ed Walline regional beach access every 10 minutes, with the last departure at 6:50 p.m.
The tram works well for a beach afternoon that ends with an early drink at the corner. It doesn't work for the ride home. The last Dune Allen Local leaves at 6:30 p.m., and Shunk Gulley serves until 10. A sunset dinner there still means a car, a bike, or a walk home.
The county's road plans for Dune Allen won't change that this year. A September 21 public workshop covered proposed right-of-way improvements on CR 30A from east of Hilltop Lane to west of Allen Loop. The plans include a 10-foot multi-use path, sidewalks, and drainage work, with construction anticipated in fall 2027.
For now, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club hasn't published a construction schedule or a decision on who the next Gulf-front building will serve. The nearest open Gulf-view dining room is the sunset-facing one at County Road 393 and 30A.
At Stroop Group, we keep track of changes like this one along the west end of 30A, from a landmark closing to the plans for what replaces it. If you own near the club or the 393 corner and want to know how changes there might affect your home's value, ask us for a free home valuation.
